Symposium ‘Earth Observation & Data Science’

Today, the tools for capturing data, on both a mega-scale and a milli-scale, are immense and still emerging. As a result we have to face the challenges of Big Data: large data sets, both in size and complexity. To do this, we need new methods and technologies for data handling, visualization and knowledge acquisition.

The goal of this symposium is to achieve a thorough understanding of the true potential of data science and its benefits. This year the symposium will have a special emphasis in Earth Observation data.

The central question addressed in this symposium is “What are the main data challenges in earth observation and what do the solutions look like?” The speakers will give their perspectives on present and future aspects around this theme.

We are happy to announce the following confirmed speakers:

  • Joost van Bemmelen
Copernicus space component mission management, ESA
  • Peter Baumann
Professor computer science, Jacobs University Bremen
  • Jos Maccabiani
    Director professional services, SkyGeo
  • Francesco Carlo Nex
Associate professor Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation, UTwente
  • Jaap Kwadijk
    Chairman of scientific board, Deltares

We moreover have the pleasure to say that Deltares’ director Maarten Smits will introduce the vision of Deltares on the earth observation topic.

The program showcases various experiences how to use Earth Observation data together with other kinds of external data, and how to extract Information and knowledge, forming the basis for creating Solutions that help decision makers and the general public. We will end the day with a get-together where you can share your opinions with other participants.
